Workers submit demands as Niger’s labour minister marks international workers’ day with pledges of reform

In a solemn yet purposeful ceremony marking the 139th anniversary of the Chicago labour movement, Niger’s Minister of Public Service, Labour and Employment, Aïssatou Aboulaye Tondi, received workers’ official demand booklets on Thursday, May 1, 2025, in Niamey.

The commemorative event, held at the ministry’s headquarters, was dedicated to acknowledging the plight of workers and advancing their rights.

The demand booklets—symbolically presented by major trade unions—focused on improving employment conditions across key sectors of the country.

Central among the workers’ demands were the integration of contractual workers in education and health into the formal civil service, a revaluation of salaries, and the payment of outstanding financial entitlements.

Among those who submitted their demands were representatives of six major labour organisations: the Alliance of Niger Workers (ATN), the Democratic Confederation of Niger Workers (CDTN), the Convergence of Niger Workers (CTN), the Inter-Union of Niger Workers (ITN), the Independent Trade Union Confederation (CSI-Niger), and the National Union of Niger Trade Unions (UNSN).

In her response, Minister Aïssatou Aboulaye Tondi reassured union leaders of the government’s commitment to their concerns.

“Their grievances will be examined and addressed with the utmost urgency, and a memorandum of understanding will soon be signed to that effect,” she stated.

As part of the celebrations, the ministry also held an honours ceremony recognising dedicated public, semi-public, and private sector employees.

Several individuals received awards, ranging from the Grand Gold Medal of Labour to gold, silver, and bronze medals for outstanding dedication.

Minister Tondi offered heartfelt congratulations to the awardees, saying, “I congratulate the proud recipients for their distinction.”

The event took place in the presence of members of the National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland, government officials, and a host of distinguished guests, underscoring its national importance.
