Local tech firm Nigérienne du Net et des Technologies (Ninetec) has officially launched its groundbreaking satellite internet solution, NINE-Starlink, promising fast and reliable internet access even in the country’s most remote regions.
The unveiling ceremony, held on April 30, 2025, in Niamey, was presided over by Minister of Communication and Information Technology, Mr. Adji Ali Salatou.
The event drew top government officials, diplomats, and technical partners, underscoring its national significance.
Ninetec, a 100% Nigerien-owned company founded by three entrepreneurs living in the country, has become the official distributor of Starlink, the satellite internet service developed by Elon Musk’s SpaceX.
The partnership makes Ninetec a central player in Niger’s ambitious push toward digital inclusion and sovereignty.
Ousseni Garba Béchir, Managing Director of Ninetec, expressed deep pride in the local roots of the initiative.
“This project reflects not only a desire for innovation, but also a mission of technological and economic sovereignty,” he said, highlighting the company’s commitment to providing concrete solutions to Niger’s connectivity challenges.
Colonel-Major Idrissa Chaibou, Director General of ARCEP, Niger’s telecoms regulator, praised the launch as a “major step forward in consolidating Niger’s digital sovereignty.”
He credited the strategic vision of President Abdourahamane Tiani and thanked Prime Minister Ali Mahamane Lamine Zeine for his continued support of infrastructure reforms.
International observers also welcomed the development.
James Stewart of the U.S. Embassy’s Economic Council called the project “a decisive contribution to bridging the digital divide in Niger,” noting its potential to stimulate economic growth and unlock creative opportunities for youth and businesses alike.
Minister Salatou confirmed that Starlink services have been operational in Niger since March 13, 2025.
He said the technology “will profoundly transform the daily lives of citizens,” especially in vital areas such as education, health, and public administration.
“Every school and health center, regardless of its location, will now be able to benefit from direct access to information and knowledge,” he added.
A technical demonstration highlighted NINE-Starlink’s features, followed by a press briefing where Ninetec’s leadership outlined future plans for expanding digital access across the country.
The launch is expected to accelerate Niger’s digital transformation and position the nation as a leader in tech-driven development in West Africa.
